Additive manufacturing – a growing industry
Currently, there is an increasing demand for advanced skills in additive manufacturing. To meet this demand, Mid Sweden University is now expanding its educational offer with a master’s program.
Additive manufacturing is a rapidly growing industry. There is a great demand for advanced skills, and for those who choose to be trained in the subject, there are many great career choices. This autumn a new master's program in additive manufacturing started at Campus Östersund.
– These are skills that leads to interesting jobs, both in academia and industry. With this degree under your belt, you become attractive on the job market both nationally and internationally, so there are great opportunities to build a career after graduation, says Lars-Erik Rännar, professor in mechanical engineering and a teacher on the program Additive manufacturing.
Great demand from the industry
Application designer, designer, product developer or project manager, and competence in quality development and production are some examples of professional roles and skills that are in demand today. And the need has grown rapidly in recent years. An analysis carried out by the network the Swedish Arena for Additive Manufacturing of Metals shows that there are several directions that need to be developed. One example is the industry’s call for expertise within the area.
– Through the state foundation for knowledge and competence development, the Knowledge Foundation, we have been given the opportunity to develop new programs at advanced level so that we can respond to the industry’s need for competence, says Lars-Erik Rännar.
Stimulating study environment
The program in additive manufacturing has its own research facilities on campus, where the students can take part in various research projects. Since the activities are in the same building, a natural closeness is created between students, teachers, and active researchers in the subject, says Lars-Erik Rännar.
– We are a small research group with extensive experience and we have an open climate that brings integration between students and teachers. Our doors are always open to students. The campus in Östersund also has a unique proximity to leisure activities in the mountains and surrounding areas. It was one of the main reasons why I myself moved to Östersund as a student 25 years ago, he concludes.
