  • Sabbaticals 2025 - 2028

Within the framework of the internationalisation initiative, Mid Sweden University will annually announce funding for a stay abroad, a so-called sabbatical (ref. no. MIUN 2024/1001). The purpose is to enable permanent employees with a doctoral degree to initiate or maintain international research collaborations, broaden their research horizons, as well as to continue with already started or start new research. The aim is also to strengthen Mid Sweden University's researchers' international contacts through a stay abroad.

Area: all subjects within Mid Sweden University

Applied by: Permanent employee at Mid Sweden University with a PhD

Granted for: at least 3 months and must be completed within one year (and not to be divided into more than two occasions/periods of stay abroad)

Application deadline: August 30, 2024, and should be sent to Torbjörn Westerlund

Processing of granted funds for the 2024 sabbatical call must begin during the calendar year 2025.

    Terms and conditions

    Application and budget

    Summary

The summary must be written in Swedish and English and may comprise a maximum of 1,000 characters including spaces and must explain why the stay is important, its purpose, the significance of it being carried out at the chosen university and how it will be carried out. It should be formulated in such a way that an interested public can understand.

    Project description

The project description must be written in Swedish or English and formulated in such a way so as to make it possible for Mid Sweden University's interdisciplinary review panel to assess the scientific quality. It may cover a maximum of 3 A4 pages and must contain:

    • Information about the university to be visited and the time periods during which it will take place.
    • Purpose and brief description of the structure of the research, and any scientific results in terms of publications, presentation, etc.
    • Contribution to the international research frontier.
    • Connection to the chosen university, possible collaborations with researchers at the host university and possible new or further collaborations.
    • How the stay abroad can contribute to the research environment and also how it aligns with the research strategy of the subject/centre/forum. Examples of how knowledge transfer would be carried out should also be included.

Furthermore, the application must also include:

    • Information about, and invitation from, the institution to be visited (can be supplemented up to 2024-09-30).
    • Confirmation from the head of department that it is possible to carry out the exchange: that there is room in the position for the trip and that it contributes to the research environment.
    • A short curriculum vitae.
    • Budget, prepared by the Division of Economics. The funds should cover salary, travel, subsistence and increased living costs. The guideline is 500 000 SEK per sabbatical.

    Assessment criteria

The applications will be assessed based on the potential of the proposed stay for the further development and internationalisation of the applicant and the research environment here at Mid Sweden University.

Applicants who have not previously received internal funds for sabbatical will be given priority.

    Decision and assessment group

The assessment group consists of one representative from each faculty board, each student union and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor. The assessment group reviews the applications and suggests which applications that should be approved for funding. The assessment may include interview(s). No predetermined distribution between sabbaticals and visiting professors is applied, rather the applications that are deemed best and most relevant to the local research environment are funded. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor makes decisions on allocations.

A brief account of how the funds have been used should be made by the project manager when the project is completed. These reports will be used in future Vice-Chancellor dialogues and serve as a basis for overall follow-up to ensure that the decision has had the effect it was intended for. The Office for Research and Educational Support (FUS) is responsible, in consultation with the faculty offices, for the administration of the initiative. The follow-up is sent to FUS.

  • In 2023 and 2024, Mid Sweden University has begun work to establish collaborations with Indian universities, regarding education and research. To encourage collaborations between Mid Sweden University and the Indian universities (with a signed Memorandum of Understanding), strategic partner funds are now available to apply for. The strategic partner funds are a kind of seed money for initiating collaborations and joint research or education activities. Mid Sweden University and, normally, the cooperating Indian university contribute equally with funds.

Application: The responsible researcher (project manager) at Mid Sweden University submits the joint application with the Indian University

Application deadline: Applications can be submitted continuously during the period 2024 – 2025.

    Application sends to: rektorsbeslut@miun.se

    Collaborating Indian universities

Mid Sweden University and, normally, the collaborating Indian University will jointly contribute matching funds to support joint initiatives for the development of collaborative activities that can lead to effective research and/or educational outcomes. Memorandum of understanding with cooperating universities in India is in place for the following universities:

    Application

For research initiatives, the applications are expected to include that the applicant department at Mid Sweden University and the collaborating department at the Indian University jointly prepare, for example, a complete application for additional funding (external funding), joint publications, workshops, exchange between the departments/subjects.

For educational initiatives, the applications are expected to include that both universities work together to, for example, develop joint projects for their degree programmes or courses, teacher exchange or student exchange.

The responsible researcher (project manager) at Mid Sweden University submits the joint application to rektorsbeslut@miun.se. The application must be signed by both universities by the corresponding head of department. Representatives of the departments of both HEIs must therefore confirm that they have consented to the joint submission of the application. Applications can be submitted continuously during the period 2024 – 2025.

    Financing

A maximum of 15 projects with a focus on research and 15 projects with a focus on education can be granted funding of up to SEK 75,000 each from Mid Sweden University for one year. A research and education application can be combined into one project and in that case receive up to SEK 150,000 from Mid Sweden University.

    Project content

The projects should be in areas of mutual interest and complementarity that strengthen the partnership between MIUN and the collaborating Indian university. The projects will include participants from both universities and show a path to increased collaboration between the universities. Proposals from all areas and thematic areas are welcomed. Examples of common project formats:

    • Joint research applications or research projects
    • Mobility of students, doctoral students, teachers and researchers
    • Joint training projects
    • Other forms of partnership that can be promoted and implemented jointly when both universities' departments/subjects find it beneficial for both parties.

    Decision

The proposals will be assessed by a committee consisting of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, members from both universities' departments and the student unions. Project proposals that cover sensitive areas or areas with restricted access, prior approval and approval from both HEIs and all relevant authorities will be required before the project can be initiated.

For Mid Sweden University, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor decides on allocation.

  • Visiting Professor 2025 - 2028

Within the framework of the internationalisation initiative, Mid Sweden University is announcing funding for visiting professors (ref. no. MIUN 2024/1001). The purpose is for visiting professors to stimulate new international networks and contacts. The purpose is also for the visiting professor to act as a mentor for junior employees (that is, employees of a young career age), where at least 10% of a full-time position must be set aside for employees' qualifications and the opportunity for international mobility. If the collaboration is successful, the employee must be given the opportunity to visit and stay at the visiting professor's home university or other suitable research environment in order to deepen the collaboration and provide the opportunity to make further contacts. SEK 100,000 is set aside for the financing of employees' stays at the visiting professor's home university or equivalent. Mobility funds may not be used for salary.

Invited visiting professors can be employed at the equivalent of 10% of a full-time position for at least 1.5 years. If employment is not possible, an agreement is instead made between the visiting professor's employer and Mid Sweden University on compensation between the partners corresponding to the same amount. The scope of the employment/stay may not be less than the proposed level. However, the department may choose to increase the scope and duration of the employment/stay with its own funding.

To be applied by: Research environment or individual researcher with the approval of the head of department

Granted for: 10% employment for at least 1.5 years

Application deadline: August 30, 2024 and should be sent to Torbjörn Westerlund, FUS/Grants Office

Processing of granted funds for the 2024 Visiting Professor call must begin within the calendar year 2025.
