Aim

The purpose of the course is to provide a good ability to use sociological insights and analyses in a practical context for understanding and managing risks, crises, and/or welfare issues.

Course objectives

After completing the course, the student should demonstrate the ability to:

  • Define a research problem, plan and conduct a research study including empirical data collection, interpretation and analysis, as well as theoretical connection and discussion,
  • Present, discuss, and defend the study in a seminar and conduct opposition on another equivalent study,
  • Account for the structure and processes of the internship organisation regarding the internship’s specialisation,
  • Critically discuss and relate to the work of the internship organisation regarding the internship’s specialisation,
  • Reflect on social aspects in and around the internship organisation, and
  • Identify, formulate, and discuss problems and opportunities in the internship organisation.

Content

During this course, the student works as an unpaid intern in a private company, a public organisation, or a non-profit entity. The student must identify and contact the organisation of their choice, in dialogue with the course's responsible tutor, and arrange all practical details. The student will be supervised by an advisor based in the department and a mentor at the workplace. Each student must prepare a detailed internship plan under supervision by their tutor, which should be in accordance with the needs of the mentor at the workplace. In addition to performing tasks for the employer, the student must conduct the academic assignments and remain in regular contact with the supervisor.

Entry requirements

A bachelor's degree of at least 180 credits in social or behavioural sciences, of which a minimum of 60 credits in sociology. English course 6/English course B from Swedish Upper Secondary School. (Gymnasium) or the equivalent.

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

Teaching is in the form of lectures and seminars, as well as supervision.

Other information

The student is responsible for arranging an internship placement. The programme coordinator must approve the placement well before the course commences. Before the course commences, there must be a written placement agreement between the host organisation (i.e. the workplace), the student and the programme coordinator.

Course certificates, credit transfers, appeals etc. are regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance.
