Aim

This course aims to deepen knowledge about different aspects of sustainable working life in relation to labour market and how this has developed over time. Based on a Swedish context, the course delves into different welfare systems and how these can be understood in relation to the opportunities and limitations of the individual in working life.

Course objectives

After completing the course, the student should demonstrate the ability to:

  • Understand historical and contemporary perspectives in working life and labour market from a sustainable perspective.

  • Analyse different social welfare systems and their importance for a sustainable working life and labour market, over time.

  • Evaluate different societal structures and changes, how they affect, and are affected by the opportunities and conditions of the individual in different spheres of the labour market.

Content

The course examines historical and contemporary phenomena of the labour market by exploring and discussing present and future labour markets, with a focus on social sustainability. We start from selected welfare systems that develop over time based on societal changes, for example parental insurance. The course then takes a closer look at changes to the labour market, and access to different jobs and positions. The course addresses both the structural and individual level, taking into account aspects such as place, context, and social position.
