Aim

The course aims to provide in-depth knowledge of contemporary sociological theories of risk and uncertainty. Furthermore, the course aims to develop analytical skills and knowledge of methods and research strategies for research on risk and uncertainty.

Course objectives

After completing the course, the student should demonstrate the ability to:

  • Describe and compare contemporary sociological theories of risk and uncertainty

  • Analyse and examine societal risks and uncertainties from a contemporary sociological perspective.

  • Independently identify and analyse an empirical problem based on contemporary sociological perspectives on risk and uncertainty.

Content

This course continues where the introduction course left off, going deeper into the sociological study of risk and uncertainty. The course deals with how risk and uncertainty are perceived, constructed, managed, communicated and/or neglected by social actors at individual, organizational and societal levels. We study recent developments of the field from a critical perspective, and discuss and review different streams of contemporary research such as intersectional risk research and governance of risk. Parts of the course literature are customized, allowing students to drill down into their specific interests within risk and uncertainty and its empirical applications.
