Aim
This course aims at developing students’ knowledge of qualitative methods in sociological research and its implication for knowledge production and ethics. Particular focus is paid to building understanding of different methods of data collection and practical skills of analysis.
Course objectives
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be equipped to:
- Explain and evaluate collection and analysis of qualitative data in relation to theories of knowledge production.
- Outline and assess research ethics in relation to qualitative methods.
- Explain, utilise, and evaluate different methods to analyse qualitative data.
Content
This course provides students with the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of qualitative methods in sociological research and to practice analysing qualitative data. We explore selected qualitative research methods, their theoretical foundations, and their empirical applicability. The course also critically engages with research ethics, including its theoretical and practical implications.
Entry requirements
A bachelor's degree of at least 180 credits in social or behavioural sciences, of which a minimum of 60 credits in sociology. English course 6/English course B from Swedish Upper Secondary School (Gymnasium) or the equivalent.
Selection rules and procedures
The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

Teaching is in the form of lectures and seminars.
Examination form
1000: Seminars, 2 Credits
Grade scale: Two-grade scale
In the event of absence from a mandatory seminar, a completion task is given.
2000: Exam Paper, 5.5 Credits
Grade scale: Three-grade scale
The course is examined through a written assignment and seminars.
