Aim

The course will provide students with knowledge of perception, cognition, learning and emotion. The various areas are defined and problematized.

Course objectives

On completion of the course students will be able to:

Knowledge and understanding
• Define the concepts perception, emotion, cognition and learning and problematize, discuss and compare concepts.
• Have an understanding how the process related to the concepts interact with each other.
• Generally describe the chain of information processing and reaction, from perception to metacognition.
• Based on experimental learning psychology understand and explain basic learning principles.
• Understand the central aspects of emotion regulation and emotionperception

Competence and skills
• Carry out a simple behaviour analysis in terms of operant and respondent behaviours.
• Give examples of methods that can be used for scientific analysis of perceptual, cognitive, learning and emotional phenomena.
• From a given text identify the emotion theory departure.

Judgement and approach
• Identify areas where the level of knowledge is unclear or where there is controversy.

Content

The course gives an introduction to and deepening in the areas: Sensory and perception, cognition, experimental learning psychology, and emotion as an integrative perspective on human behavior and information processing. For all areas both theoretical knowledge and practical and applications in the form of laboratory work. The four areas are studied in parallel during the course period.

General entry requirements and proven proficiency in English, equal to the English course 6 from Swedish Upper Secondary School
(Äldre gymnasiebetyg)

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

Assessment will be by written assignment, in addition to compulsory attendance at laboratory work.

To get a pass grade (G) all learning goals of the course must be reached.

The examiner has the right to offer alternative examination arrangements to students who have been granted the right to special support by Mid Sweden University’s disabilities adviser.

Attendance at course seminars, groups work and practicals is compulsory. Students not meeting the requirement of compulsory attendance will be given opportunity make up the work missed during the following year or the next time the course is offered.

Examination restrictions

Students registered on this version of the syllabus have the right to examine three (3) times within one (1) year according to this syllabus. After that, the latest version of the syllabus applies.
