Aim

The aim of the course is that the student, within the major area of teacher educational studies, developes:

- ability to make independent and critical judgement;
- ability to identify, formulate and solve problems independently,
- readiness to meet the changes in working life, and search for and evaluate knowledge on a scientific level,
- ability to follow the development of knowledge and exchange knowledge also with people without special knowledge within the field.

Course objectives

After completion of the course the students should:
- have gained knowledge and understanding of the contemporary educational system and the features and development of childcare and schooling in Sweden,
- display ability to critically reflect on and analyze the policies and practice of childcare and schooling in political, societal, cultural, and pedagogical contexts,
- have gained knowledge and understanding of the importance of equality and fundamental values for educational work,
- display ability to search, collect and interpret relevant information concerning educational development in historical and international perspectives.

Content

The Swedish educational system in general, as well as with a special focus on childcare and schooling.
-Curricala and other policy documents concerning childcare and schooling in Sweden.
- Features of family politics and its influence on childcare and schooling.
- The development of teachers´profession
- Policies and implementation concerning "education for all"
- Fundamental values of democracy in educational work.

Selection rules and procedures

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

Teaching form

The teaching is normally organized through lecturing, seminars, group exercises and tutorials. The teaching activities can be carried out with support from information and communication technology as a whole or partly. Parts of the teaching can be compulsory. The course will be given in English.

Examination form

1000: Exam, 7.5 Credits
Grade scale: Seven-grade scale, A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F. Fx and F represent fail levels.

The course examinations are written and oral, continuous or final. The course work should be examined at the ordinary examination or re-examined at a later occasion during the same semester. Two opportunities to re-examine the course work are normally given in the following semester while the student has requested it. After that a student with a fail-grade is advised to participate in the next ordinary examination. Re-examinations based on the same curriculum are guaranteed within one year after the first registration on the course.
