Aim
The purpose of the course is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of design principles for additive manufacturing, incorporating examples from various methods and materials.
Course objectives
After completing the course, the student should be able to:
- apply topology optimization and network structures for various constructions, such as lightweight, conformal cooling channels, and heat exchangers.
- structural design of parts in materials common for additive manufacturing.
- determine if a design is suitable for additive manufacturing.
- orally and in writing present product ideas, problems, and opportunities in design solutions with a focus on additive manufacturing.
- critically review, evaluate, and draw conclusions from obtained results, and
- reflect on method selection and project execution.
Content
- Basic principles of material extrusion and powder bed fusion.
- Fundamental design principles, such as overhang, holes, thin parts, support structures.
- Strut-based lattice structures and other types of structures.
- Topology optimization.
- Computer-Aided Engineering, from design domain to file for manufacturing.
- Design using Finite Element Method.
- Additive manufacturing of parts.
