Aim
The aim of the course is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of methods for additive manufacturing (AM) in metals and alloys. Furthermore, the course will give an introduction to methods available for the additive manufacturing of non-metallic materials and to postprocessing of metal AM parts.
Course objectives
After completing the course, the student shall be able to:
- analyze and compare different methods for additive manufacturing in metals, with respect to applications, technical possibilities and limitations,
- describe the main methods available for the manufacturing of ceramics, composites, and other non-metallic materials,
- describe the main methods for manufacturing of parts using powder metallurgy,
- prepare a build for additive manufacturing,
- select the adequate post-processing methods for specific applications of additively manufactured components, and motivate the choice, and
- calculate manufacturing costs by using cost models.
Content
The course content includes:
- additive methods for metal and other non-metallic materials (the categories according to ASTM/ISO standards).
- preparation of files for metal additive manufacturing with focus on Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) methods.
- post-processing methods for metals manufactured using additive manufacturing (support removal, heat treatments, etc).
- cost models for conventional and additive manufacturing.
- most recent development and trends in research and industry in the metal additive manufacturing arena.
