Aim
The couse aims to give the student a stable theoretical basis to be able to understand crime and societ’s reactions to crime.
Course objectives
When finalizing the couse the student will be able to:
- describe the central and fundamental criminological theories at the individual
and structural level based on biological, psychological and sociological
perspectives
- describe integrated criminological theories and criminological life-course theories
- describe modern criminological theories with a focus on gender, power and
culture
- apply criminological theories to crime-related phenomena.
Content
The course contains theories regarding the causes and origin of crime, as well as theories that deal with how crime can be understood based on societal structures. The course will deal with central and fundamental theories of criminology, which includes both classical and modern theories and frameworks.

The teaching forms includes lectures, written assignments and seminars with group and individual work.
Examination form
1000: Classic Criminological Theories, Written examination, 3 Credits
Grade scale: Seven-grade scale, A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F. Fx and F represent fail levels.
2000: Application of Modern Criminological Theories, Assignment Report, 4.5 Credits
Grade scale: Seven-grade scale, A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F. Fx and F represent fail levels.

Examination restrictions
Students admitted to the previous version of the course are entitled to examine 3 times within 1 year according to that syllabus. Thereafter, the latest version of the syllabus applies.
