Aim

Students will acquire knowledge such as concepts, both simple and more advanced, relationships and methods within solid state physics that are required in various engineering application and for further studies in physics.

Course objectives

After completing the course, the student shall be able to:
- use concepts in solid state physics;
- use physical and mathematical relationships to solve problems in solid state physics;
- perform experiments and interpret the meaning and significance of the results;
- document their experimental work, and perform clear, well-arranged solution proposals and laboratory reports.

Content

Crystal structure, crystal dynamics, free electrons in metals, energy bands, semiconductors, semiconductor devices, diamagnetism and paramagnetism, magnetic order, electric properties of insulators, waves in crystals, scattering of electrons and neutrons, real three-dimensional metals and its fermi surfaces, low-dimensional systems.

Entry requirements

Introductory courses in Calculus, Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Quantum Mechanics, and Statistical Mechanics.

Teaching form

The teaching is conducted in the form of one or more: lectures, video lectures, seminars or tutoring, as well as laboratories. The teaching may be wholly or partly given in English.
