Aim
The course aims to provide a good understanding of the design, manufacturing and mounting of circuit boards and knowledge of the importance of grounding, planes and trace routing. The course also provides knowledge of component tolerances, frequency and temperature dependencies of those and its impact on a circuit. The course also deals with power supplies of an electronic system as well as electromagnetic compatibility and methods to minimize this.
Course objectives
After passing the course, the student should be able to:
- design a simple circuit board,
- describe the different steps of the E-CAD process,
- describe the different types of circuit boards available and how they are manufactured,
- design simpler power supply systems and know how they can affect the environment,
- describe temperature dependencies and parasitic effects of typical active and passive components,
- describe basic EMC phenomena and methods to minimize this.
Content
- Design and manufacturing of circuit boards,
- Use of electronics CAD tools for circuit board design,
- Dimensioning of conductors on circuit boards as well as ground planes
- Simulation of electronic systems,
- Parasitic effects,
- Active and passive components and their tolerances,
- Frequency and temperature dependencies and their effect on a circuit,
- Operational amplifiers and voltage references,
- Crosstalk,
- Interfacing between analog and digital electronics and how they affect each other,
- Power supplies and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)
Entry requirements
At least 30 credits in Electronics including analog and digital electronics.
