Aim
The course aims to analyze voltage converters at a detailed level so that it is possible to implement and analyze its control system. The course also covers design and analysis of magnetic components for voltage converters.
Course objectives
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to
- design and analyze the feedback systems of switching converters
- understand the fundamentals of magnetic components, including inductors and transformers
- analyze and model losses in magnetic components, and understand design trade-offs
- design and optimize inductors and transformers for switched-mode power converters
Content
This course covers design of feedback system to control a switching converter and magnetics components used in power electronics. Small signal transfer functions is extracted to analyze the control system in terms of output regulation, bandwidth and transient response, and rejection of disturbances.
Design, analysis, and modeling of inductors and transformers for power electronic converters are covered including core material properties, airgap, energy storage, magnetic and leakage inductance. Core and copper losses in magnetic components are analyzed, including skin and proximity effects.
Entry requirements
Electrical Engineering MA, Power Converter Analysis, 7.5 credits.
