Economics offers an exciting way to understand how society works from different perspectives. The subject covers everything from the situation of individuals and families to the functioning of the international economy.
Economics as a science studies choices between different goods and services. Based on society's scarcity o resources and household preferences, economists try to explain how the economic system produces goods and services that meet these preferences.
One branch of economics, micro theory, studies how the problem of saving is solved in a market economy. How do households and firms choose what they buy, sell, produce, save and invest, and how much they work? How are prices and wages determined by competition in markets?
The second branch, macroeconomic theory, tries to explain the development of the economy as a whole: economic growth, business cycles, unemployment, inflation, exchange rates, interest rates, current account and government finances. It also studies the possibilities of influencing economic development through monetary and fiscal policy.
In addition to these central elements, various sub-courses deal with stabilization policy, structural and growth problems, financial economics and relations in the international economy.
Characteristic of studies in economics is a strong methodological element. Particular emphasis is placed on quantitative methods through a course in econometrics. The emphasis on methodology gives you the ability to independently and critically analyze many different economic problems based on available material.
