Limitless competence
The aim of this project is to broaden the scope of competence, to see possibilities across borders, and not let preconceptions limit the view. We study: (1) how employers conceive of competence, who has it and where to find it, and (2) how norms about competence shape young people’s career choices.
The project is structured around three main work packages:
- A cohort study of young adults in the region (Västernorrland, Jämtland, and Trøndelag), where these are followed backwards in time via register data regarding educational and occupational patterns. Here the importance of family background, geographical background, school background, etc. is studied.
- A survey aimed at a representative sample of young people. The survey deals with young people’s perceptions of their abilities and interests and ideas about what is required for various professions.
- Mapping of employers’ ideas about competence, what they need, and where it can be found. In this study relevant actors, such as business organizations, authorities, and companies are addressed.
A main theme in all studies is conditions and opportunities for men and women, girls and boys.
The three main activities are monitored by various stakeholders: schools, public authorities, companies, and organizations. The work will result in a career and competence tool that will be tested in collaboration with the stakeholders.
