Industrial symbiosis for competitive food production in Härnösand
The municipality of Härnösand make investments in promoting development for companies, not at least in food industry. For several years, the municipality are working on the establishment and development of sustainable food systems.
This project can be used for further strategic development and establishment in order to promote development in the food sector.
Food production often involves several actors and a variety of coordinated activities and initiatives are therefore required. In order to strengthen innovation for a more sustainable and circular food system in the region of Västernorrland, researchers at Mid Sweden University have been involved.
The purpose is to identify opportunities and challenges for new business models in different food systems in the region. Collaboration models in Härnösand municipality based on the concept "Industrial Symbiosis" can be a path to more sustainable and competitive food production.
– When regional food production is to be made sustainable and competitive, the concept of industrial symbiosis can be a way to the solution, states Anna-Sara Fagerholm, researcher in the project.
The project is in line with Mid Sweden University's role as central player for sustainable development in the region. The goal is to develop the work with industrial symbiosis in Norrland together with other actors. At the end of February 2021, the first network meeting was conducted with representatives from municipalities, regions and business among the participants.
The project also aims to promote development processes between traditional food production and new foodtech initiatives in the region and encloses several collaborations between Härnösand Municipality, EHB and DES departments at Mid Sweden University, Chalmers Industriteknik and other actors from business, industry and civil society.
