Building social value competency ahead of a Winter Olympic bid
Due to the cancellation of the Winter Olympics in Sweden and Jämtland, the focus and objectives of the project have been adjusted. The aim of the project is now to explore three major events in the municipality of Östersund by looking at their secondary effects.
The project will investigate how three of Östersund's largest recurring events, the three S's - Storsjöcupen, Storsjöyran and Skidskyttet, contribute to the municipality and the county in addition to the direct spending by travelling visitors.
Direct economic effects of events are relatively easy to access and are important to get an initial idea of the role of events in society. Secondary effects also form a large part of the impact of events on local communities, but they are much less well understood. Secondary impacts include questions such as which economic sectors are affected by the economic activity generated by major events in the community, and to what extent they are affected. Other questions can also be answered by looking at secondary effects, such as the role and overall impact of events in relation to activities that are active all year round.
Examining secondary effects is important to understand the nature of the impact of events on society, not just the scale.
