Hacettepe University visits STC

She received her PhD degree from the department of Computer Science, University of York, UK in 2010. Then, she joined Networking and Security Department at Eurecom Institute, France as a research visitor in 2011.

She is currently with the department of Computer Engineering, Hacettepe University, Turkey. She has been leading the WISE (Wireless Networks and Intelligent Secure Systems) Lab at Hacettepe University. She is also currently serving as an area editor of the Ad Hoc Networks journal. Her research interests are computer networks, network and systems security. Her focus is mainly in the area of mobile systems and wireless networks. Over the last few years, she has been conducting several projects in the applications of artificial intelligence based approaches to hard problems in networking and security.

Mobile malware is one of today's greatest threats in computer security. Furthermore, new mobile malware is emerging daily that introduce new security risks. However, whilst existing security solutions generally protect mobile devices against known risks, they are vulnerable to as yet unknown risks. Therefore, anti-malware software is in continuous development in order to be able to detect new malware or new variants of existing malware.

Similarly, as long as anti-malware software develops, malware writers also develop their malicious code by using various evasion strategies such as obfuscation and encryption. This is the lifecycle of malicious and anti-malware software. In this talk, I will present our approach that has been proposed to simulate this life cycle automatically. Hence, by this approach, we could both develop new variants of mobile malware and better security solutions against them automatically. In this approach, the use of co-evolutionary computation techniques is explored to explore this difficult design space. Although such techniques have always been considered a potential candidate for system security, this study is the first application in this area. In this talk, I will present the details about this approach.
